Gingivitis is inflammation, swelling and bleeding of gum tissue caused by plaque, which is a transparent, sticky film of food debris and bacteria that does not receive the proper cleaning becomes a yellowish substance called tartar or dental tartar (dental calculus).
This scale produces eventually destroys toxins and irritate the gum tissue causing it to separate from the teeth and form pockets of infection. They erode the bone causing the teeth to become loose and probably falling.
The causes of gingivitis include:
- Improper oral hygiene
- Emotional stress
- Hormonal imbalances such as pregnancy, menstruation, and hormonal changes of adolescence
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis
- Consumption of drugs such as antibiotics, anticoagulants, antihypertensives, anticonvulsants and immune-depressants.
